Jessica
Jessica began her athletic career at an early age, and competed in a wide variety of sports as a child. She began downhill skiing at the age of two, was competing in swimming by the age of six and climbed mount Robson with her Dad when she was just nine. Jessica danced for ten years, and performed in Disney Land with her dance company at age twelve.
She has been on various baseball, basketball, volleyball and rugby teams, and was a member of the same soccer team for 9 years.
At age twelve Jessica was introduced to the sport of biathlon and immediately became fascinated with the sport. Biathlon offered her something different; a chance to test her ability both mentally and physically while combining two sports of a completely different nature. After joining Biathlon BC, Jessica’s training grew in intensity with each passing year and her results steadily improved.
At age sixteen, Jessica made a decision that would show her level of dedication, independence and passion for biathlon. She decided that it would be best for her future in biathlon to move away from home and train full time with the BC High Performance team, based in Prince George. The confidence she had in making this decision finally paid off, as the improvement in her results over a year were greater than any other biathlete in the nation. From the very day she moved out she dedicated each and every moment to making herself a better biathlete. She took this time off school, but continued her courses by correspondence, so that she would be the one in control of scheduling her time.
In 2005, when the time came to try out for the National Biathlon Team, Jessica entered the race unnoticed. On the first day of the trials Jessica earned herself a silver medal just behind one of the senior athletes and was immediately put into the spotlight. After another solid performance the following day, placing fourth, Jessica had earned herself a spot on the National team. It was less than a month later that she found herself toeing up the start line at World Youth Championships only a few months later. From that day on, she never looked back and traveled the world with the national team for the next four years. Highlights of her biathlon career include a silver medal at the Canada Winter Games in 2007, three national titles in 2008, several top 30 finishes on the International Europa Cup tour and Overall North American Junior Champion in 2009.
Jessica retired from the sport of Biathlon in April 2009 having competed for eight years and transitioned into competitive distance running in June 2009. Running is a sport Jessica has adored throughout all of her athletic pursuits. She currently lives in Toronto, Ontario and has competed in distances up to 50km.
