Going Vegan
Enough talking about it, lets create it peoples! There are so many wonderful charities out there to support, but one of the most efficient ways to support the most causes with the least amount of time, money and effort is simply by eating a plant based diet.
Check it out….
Here are some of the most common reasons people go vegan:
Do it for the Planet
Animal farming is the number one cause of global warming in the world.
2,500 gallons of water are used to produce a pound of meat, compared to the 25 gallons it takes to produce a pound of grain.
70% of the grain grown in the US is used for producing meat. If that grain were being fed directly to people, those millions of children on the earth that starve to death daily, would be given a future.
Currently, 33% of the land on our planet is used to raise farm animals. And only one of those large factory farm can create as much waste as the entire city of Los Angeles.
55 square feet of tropical rainforest are destroyed to produce one quarter pound of “rainforest beef”.
260 million acres of land have been cleared to raise animals for human consumption.
85% of US topsoil has been lost due to livestock raising.
1000 species a year go extinct as a direct result of livestock raising.
In Indonesia for every 1 pound of shrimp pulled out of the ocean, 26 pounds of other ocean life are “accidentally killed” and carelessly thrown back into the ocean.
currently our oil reserves are used within 13 years to support our meat centered diets. If we ate a plant based diet, they would last 260!
Do It for the Animals
99% of all land animals used for meat, milk or eggs are factory farmed.
450 BILLION animals are factory farmed on our planet every year. Just like our pets, these are animals with mothers, fathers, and the most often overlooked: feelings. These beautiful creatures wish to live, just as we wish to live.
Dairy cows are considered the most cruelly treated animals in factory farms. They are constantly raped by man-made machines in order to stay pregnant for most of their lives. Their babies, considered byproducts, are ripped away from them and put to death almost instantly.
The over-fishing of our oceans has led to a dangerously dramatic decline in wildlife. For every ten tuna, sharks, and other large predatory fish that were in our oceans only fifty to a hundred years ago, only one is left.
Many species are on the verge of extinction for being “accidentally” killed in modern fishing practices. In Indonesia, for every one pound of shrimp, 26 pounds of other sea animals are killed and carelessly tossed back into the ocean.
Do It for People
Occupation with the highest turnover rate in the United States: Slaughterhouse worker. Many leave with severe psychological problems.
Occupation with the largest on-the-job injury: Slaughterhouse worker.
75% of South American Children under the age of of 5 are undernourished. Meanwhile the US imports 300,000,000 pounds of meat from Central and South America annually. When we hoard meat, others starve.
Only 20% of the corn grown in the US is eaten by people. The rest is fed to livestock.
Only 5% of the oats grown in the US is eaten by people. The rest is fed to livestock.
Number of people worldwide who will die as a result of malnutrition this year: 20 million or one child every 2.3 seconds.
Percentage of protein wasted by cycling grain through livestock: 90
It takes 16 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef.
Do It for Yourself
Common belief: U.S. Department of Agriculture protects our health through meat inspection
Reality: fewer than 1 out of every 250,000 slaughtered animals is tested for toxic chemical residues
One glass of milk can contain up to 20 painkillers, antibiotics and growth hormones.
Cows milk was naturally designed to turn a calf into a 500lb cow within a very short period of time. Meanwhile obesity rates in the US and Canada continue to climb and we wonder why.
Only 30 of the 250 US medical schools require a course in nutrition. In other words, its possible your mail man knows more about nutrition than your doctor.
Scientific studies supported by the American Dietetic Association have confirmed that vegan and vegetarian diets are associated with lower cholesterol, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, lower risk of hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, lower body fat, and lower overall cancer rates. Studies have shown that a vegan diet can actually REVERSE diabetes, heart disease and even cancer, which are caused by over meat consumption.
Vegetarian and vegan diets tend to be lower in saturated fat and cholesterol, have higher levels of dietary fiber, magnesium and potassium, vitamins C and E, and folate.
The American Dietetic Association (or ADA) released a report which stated that vegetarians and vegans “meet and exceed requirements” for protein consumption. In fact, vegetarians and vegans usually have better protein consumption than people who eat meat, dairy and eggs, because plant protein is more easily absorbed by our human bodies.
